Planning Your Kitchen Remodel

Remodeling:  it’s a little word brimming with big ideas.  If you’re considering embarking on a kitchen remodel of your own, take a few moments to consider the following:

Homework

Every great remodel starts with a solid foundation of planning.  This is the time to gather ideas, map out a budget and search for products and finishes that will make your kitchen unique.

Typically, upscale kitchen remodels will cost around $75,000, major mid-range projects hover around $40,000 and the average minor remodel (staying within the original footprint, for example) averages $15,000.  With so much at stake, it pays to do your homework.

Teamwork

Once you have your ideas and budget firmly in mind, begin the process of picking a winning team.  An experienced, creative, reputable contractor will be your most valuable player.  While the bid amount is always an important consideration, look for the contractor who suggests creative solutions to cost and space concerns.  

Hard Work

Be prepared to do at least some of your own labor.  This can include demolition of existing surfaces, prep-work, painting, tile application, or anything else you’re willing to tackle. 

Details

The key to an incredible kitchen transformation is in the details. Avoid excessive uniformity and ridged lines by alternating cabinet heights, widths, colors, and even materials.  If you have ample counter space, consider placing extra tall cabinets directly on the counter-top.  Open shelving, wine racks, and cook book storage are other options that vary the visual lines. 

Consider contrasting cabinet doors, drawer fronts, finishes, hardware, and surface materials, as well.  There are endless combinations, so work within your comfort zone to create a space that’s uniquely yours.

Drawers

While this is definitely personal preference, drawers can be a huge convenience; no more stooping down to see what’s in the dark recesses of a base cabinet. 

Speak Up before Paying Up

Never be afraid to speak up during your kitchen remodel.  Your contractor works for you, so if you’re not happy with something, say so.  And always reserve final payment until the inspection has been completed and you’re satisfied with the final result.
